Is Community Notes Enough? A Look at the Battle Against Misinformation and the Role of AI

Writer: Dennis YapDennis Yap

Like most Singaporean males, I got conscripted into the military and have recently finished my reservist. This week I was also told that Community Notes needs my help. But realistically, how many of Elon’s misinforming posts will be debunked, if at all by Community Notes in time to make a difference?

At the Singapore Defence Technology Summit, I shared with past, and hopefully future customers and partners of AI Seer how we are looking for academic and volunteer moderator partners to experiment with us on how our X bot: https://x.com/askfacticity? can help reduce the range and speed of the spread of faked news.

As if on cue, almost after Tim Draper kindly shared about the launch of our bot, someone put up a deepfaked video of Donald Trump saying he and Elon are going to giveaway 20 million in crypto that @AskFacticity checked and quickly found to be a common scam. Glad people are tagging our bot, and believe it can help save the world as a whole time and money as compared to highly manual, and politicized processes: https://lnkd.in/gkqrW6zV

Also, how palatable or sustainable is it to ask ordinary people to clean up the mess that their social media platform owners leave behind for free? Now that could be paradigmatic alienation and exploitation of labor — ie a scam that will make the world even more unequal.
